Young Persons Rights

From Birth

get your own passport (with parental consent)
have a bank/building society account
own premium bonds
own property
have your ears or nose or other body parts pierced (subject to shop's own policy)
be employed as an actor/actress (but you require a licence and there are rules about the hours you can work

Any age with "sufficient understanding"

agree to medical treatment
receive legal aid
sue or defend legal proceedings
may be able to see social work and health records without parental consent

At 5

have to pay child's fares on trains, buses etc.,
must start full time education next starting time
see a U or PG film unaccompanied

At 10

be considered to be capable of deciding what is a wrong action or a right one and can be taken to court charged with a criminal offence.

At 12

see a 12 certificate film
have the right to choose your own adoption
buy a pet animal
start or defend legal proceedings (under 12 too if you have sufficient understanding)

At 14

enter a pub but you can't buy or drink alcohol there (although you can be younger if the publican has a children's certificate)
ride a horse on the road without headgear
drive an electrically assisted pedal cycle
be employed part-time with restrictions

At 15

see a 15 certificate film
